Bravery Repetition and Noise with Whistlejacket - An Interview

Boa viagem.

***** Interview with Whistlejacket *****

Q. When did Whistlejacket starteds, tell us about the history...
Whistlejacket started at school, or not long after, me and danny played together under different names and with different people until we settled with Whistlejacket.

Q: Who are your influences?
My influences are mixed, i also can’t speak for the others, certainly there are things i like, adore, that the others’ despise. Personally i like the beautiful dissonance of Sonic Youth and Nirvana, i love repetition and pattern - Spacemen 3 do that really well, Elliott Smith is the most gracefully melancholic and delicate musician i can think of. There's such a long list, everything i've ever enjoyed listening to, every tune that gets stuck in my head is an influence, every sound that’s ever interested me, every phrase that’s made me think, or laugh, honestly, it goes on and on.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Again, my list is very different to the others’ list for definite but my top 5 albums of all time are: Nevermind - Nirvana,
Goo - Sonic Youth,
Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen,
Tame Impala - Lonerism
and Either/Or - Elliott Smith.

Tame Impala is the newest, but i think it’ll stand the test of time. Those are the albums i’ll always love, that i can always go back to when i don’t know what else to put on.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love playing live, it’s the best feeling, theres a chaos and an unpredictability to our shows, something always seems to break or go wrong. It's the best thing about being in a band, if we fuck up, then we fuck up together and that’s what being in a band is about, being together, and not only do we get to share that feeling with each other, but also with the audience, if that’s 1 person or a room full of people, we’re all in it together.

Q. How do you describe Whistlejacket´s sounds?
We try not to describe our sound too much, it only really boxes you in and closes people off to the idea of your music before they’ve even heard you. Plus, it’s constantly changing, if we get a new effects box or instrument, the sound changes. Everything we take in changes the sound. I could describe the Ep, i could describe the sound of the next one but it wouldn’t be the same words and it wouldn’t be the same for whatever comes after. If i had to describe our sound, i’d say it was like if Faust and Dinosaur Jr had a baby it would probably sound like us, but even then that doesn’t feel accurate. We’re not aiming for a sound or genre we want to be prolific, we want to keep growing and exploring new sounds.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
The process of recording is as simple as it could possibly be. Everything is recorded in my bedroom, sometimes Doug’s. Writing and recording is often the same process, it’s playing with sounds and techniques, creating a puzzle, putting all the pieces together and then pulling it apart.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
We’d recommend Puffer, Bare Pale and Babe Heaven, to name just a few.

Q: Which bands do you love to made a cover version of?
We argue about cover versions all the time, Sexy Boy by Air gets brought up quite a lot, i’d only like to do a cover if we could add something, otherwise it seems pointless, i think Dandelion Seeds by July would be a good one.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We’ve got loads of new stuff recorded so hopefully we’re gonna put out a second Ep soon, in the next couple of months, i’d wanted to do it slightly sooner, but the days have a way of running away from us. Continue to play as much as possible, i guess,

Q: Any parting words?
Thank you very much
