***** Interview with Sister Mystery *****

Q. When did Sister Mystery started, tell us about the history...
We got together in March of 2014. I was on tour playing in another band and was inspired to get home to start my own band again. I called my friend Brian to record some songs for me from some demos i had but as we met up to work on them, it evolved into us collaborating and writing together along with Kati Knox, and then Brian & Kati becoming members of the band. For our first EP, Charlie Woodburn played drums for us and shortly after releasing the EP, we went through some line up shifts. Now we are, myself, Brian Grover playing guitar & baritone, Jason Echeverria playing drums and Adam D’Zurilla playing bass.

Q: Who are your influences?
Jen: I am inspired by many artists and writers which in turn I’m sure influences me! Let’s see… I love The Chameleons, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, Siouxsie, Ram Dass, Talking Heads, Alain Johannes, Bell Hooks, The Cure, J Spacemen, Patti Smith…

Brian: A big influence for me is Ian MacKaye and John Steinbeck because I feel like his stories are really simple and that's why they are so moving.

Jason: A few of mine would be Michael Jackson, The Police, Jimi Hendrix, Slayer, Ice Cube...and pretty much everything from the 80's.

Adam: Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke of the Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Edge from U2, Oasis and early 90's shoegaze, The Chameleons, the production of Flood and Alan Moulder, and the early DC punk/post-punk scene.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Jen: This is a tough one! Let’s see if I can do it - ill just list the first few I can think of: Pink Floyd - Meddle, John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band, Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, The Seeds - The Seeds, The Gun Club - The Las Vegas Story

Brian: Such a hard one! I'll chose 5, but it's always changing. Queen - A Night At The Opera; Pink Floyd - Meddle; Fugazi - The Argument; Misfits - Static Age; Damien Rice - O.

Jason: I'll just mention one of my top 5 Artists. William Onyeabor. He's from Nigeria and put records out in the late 70's and early 80's. There's been a revival in his music recently and I think he's super cool.

Adam: 1.)The Smiths "Hatful of Hollow", 2.)Depeche Mode "Songs of Faith and Devotion" 3.)Ryan Adams "Love is Hell", 4.)U2 "Achtung Baby" 5.)The Shore self-titled LP.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Jen: I absolutely love playing live. I feel at peace, I feel present in the current moment, I feel strong.

Brian: It's hard to describe because you are so present , just being in the moment. Its really powerful.

Jason: I've never been satisfied by anything else in my life quite like when I'm performing.

Adam: The most comfortable and happiest I have ever been in life have been my times on stage playing live.

Q. How do you describe Sister Mystery sounds?
Jen: We are a little dreamy, a little dark and a little fun.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Jen: I like recording live. We like to write all together too, it really creates a cool vibe when we can capture it all on record. Sometimes we have friends come in and collaborate with us, which we really enjoy – it can bring in other elements and things you might not have thought of. Brian is also an enginner and makes and fixes guitars, which is great. Priceless to have someone with those talents in your band.

Brian: We are fortunate enough to have our own studio so we have the freedom to do what we need and really take time experimenting with songs.

Adam: I love recording live, it retains the energy of the song and groove and the feel for bass and drums especially.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Jen: Merchandise, Corners, True Widow, Mini Mansions, Alain Johannes’ solo records…

Brian: Corners, Leon Bridges.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Jen: Anything by Wipers or The Gun Club

Brian: Yeah, what Jen said. Or The Toadies.

Q: What´s the plans for future….
Jen: We are writing a ton of new songs, about to release a Cassette EP and a split 7” with our friends Invsn (from Sweden) and are just focusing on playing live and getting out on tour.

Q: Any parting words?
Jen: Do less, be more. Thank you for interviewing us!

Brian: Thank you and hope to see you all soon.
