Day Hang with Serfs - An Interview

***** Interview with Serfs *****

Q. When did Serfs start? Tell us about the history...
Serfs started in 2011. Patrick, David and I have known each other for a long time and we decided to move into a house together and start a band. So we did that and it was cool, though now we've grown up a little and moved in with our girlfriends and fiancees and it's still cool because we still have a band. Nicholas has been playing drums with us for a couple years now and he's also become a close friend. We've released some singles and an EP but Day Hang is our first full-length and we changed our sound a little bit for it. It's moodier and maybe catchier.

Q: Who are your influences?
When we started the band I think we were all really into Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins and shit like that. But I mean those are pretty broad, sort-of all-encompassing bands to list as influences. I think a lot of bands can be traced back in influence to one of those. I really like quiet pop music like Emmitt Rhodes. We were influenced by local groups who were together at the time, like Blossoms and Chemical Peel. Right now we are getting ready to record an EP and I've been thinking about our approach to the overall production of the songs, and these days I tend to ask myself "What would Bo White do?" when it comes to decisions about structure and texture.

 Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Like, 5 favorite albums of all time? Or just 5 albums of all time? Haha.
The Ronettes: Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica
Happy Birthday: Happy Birthday
Stevie Wonder: Music of My Mind
Sean Nicholas Savage: Flamingo
Nas: Illmatic

 Q. How do you feel playing live?
Incredibly anxious but in that good way I guess.

Q. How do you describe Serfs sounds?
I try not to.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
For this album we spent a weekend at Old House with our friend Daniel Hodges who engineered it. We tracked drums, bass and some guitar at the same time I think. Then we added more guitars and vocals at Daniel's own space. It was super relaxed for us. For bands that don't have the equipment or aren't interested in self-recording, he'd be a great person to work with. He does his best to make a band sound like themselves.

 Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Locally, I like Tape Daze, Pink Pots, Monster Crux and Shadowgraphs.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We covered Joy Division for Halloween a couple years ago. I can't ever settle on a band for Serfs to cover so we just stick to writing to our own songs.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We're posting up at Snug Harbor in Charlotte for a residency every Wednesday night in March, except for the third Wednesday because we'll be on tour that week. Then we're recording six songs.

 Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for asking us questions and supporting us. Seeya.
