Chromesthesia with White Shape - An Interview

***** Interview with White Shape *****

q. When did White Shape start? Tell us about the history...
The drummer(noah), bassist(jon), keyboardist/vocals(kayla), and myself guitar/vocals(josh) all played in other bands before this one. Jon and I played in a band that used to play with Noah’s a lot. I used to watch him drum and think “I need to start a band with this dude”. So in 2015 we started jamming as a 2 piece for fun. Then our friend Alyssa joined in on synth and we had a trio. We played our first show 6 months later probably. Since then we’ve had a revolving door of members and the current lineup now seems to be the one. Noah and I are very happy with what White Shape has turned out to be. Everyone gets along great and our different tastes of music really make us sound unique, I think.

Q: Who are your influences?
Personally, when I write I usually draw influences from the band that opened a whole world of music up to me. The black angels. I stumbled upon them in 2006 and saw them live in 2007. My world hasnt been the same since. I also draw from bands like Pink Floyd(of course), true widow, barn owl, myrrors, and even doom bands like sleep or windhand. I like to start spacey and end the song in a whirlwind.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
1: Directions to see a ghost-the Black angels
2: Strangers- marissa nadler
3: Vol 4- Black Sabbath
4: True widow-true widow
5: Lost in the glare-barn owl

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live for us is the greatest high of all time. It’s addictive. We put hours and hours of work in for a 50 min set that’s over in a flash. It’s so worth it. We love playing live.

Q. How do you describe White Shape sounds?
We try to make our sound haunting, melodic, droney, heavy at times, with lots and lots of reverb.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
I guess. Kayla has a background in folk music and when I send her a riff or an idea for a song, she sends me back the keyboard part and vocals to it and I’m always blown away. She’s incredible. Jon has been my bass man for years. His bass lines are perfect every time. The drumbeat I have in my head for a song idea is nothing compared to what noah comes up with. His style is the wildest style I’ve ever seen. He really knows how to bring the war drums. When Kayla, jon, or Noah bring an idea to practice, it’s the same process. One small idea turns into a 10 minute song. All of our musical backgrounds really work well together. It’s cool.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Coffin Problem, holy fawn, moon rats, vanishing kids, and bedforms.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
I would personally love to cover hidden prettiness by pontiak. I think we could do that song pretty well. My favorite song of 2017 so far.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
Stay busy writing, keep putting out records, play as many different cities as we can, and maybe play a small run of shows in Europe. Keep it fun!

Q: Any parting words?
HUGS BEFORE HANDSHAKES
